Hands up if you've been staring at course pages trying to work out whether you need Mat before Reformer Pilates!

You are nowhere near the only one asking. It's one of the most common questions we get about Pilates training, and it changes your route and your cost, so it's worth a proper answer instead of a quick line in an email. Here it is in full, no dodging.

Do I need Mat before Reformer? The short answer

No, not always. Whether you need Level 3 Mat first depends entirely on which Reformer qualification you're going for. There are two routes, and they have two different answers.

The two Reformer routes, and what each one asks of you

Reformer Certification: no, you can start here first

If you're training for our Reformer Certification, you don't need to hold a Level 3 Mat qualification first. There's no prior fitness qualification required at all, just a regular Reformer Pilates practice of your own. It's the certification most working Reformer instructors in the UK actually hold: widely accepted by studios, and sufficient for professional teaching insurance.

This suits you if you want to start teaching Reformer as soon as possible, and Mat isn't part of your plan right now.

YMCA Level 3 Reformer: yes, Mat comes first

If you want the YMCA Level 3 Reformer, the fully regulated qualification sitting on the UK's Regulated Qualifications Framework, then yes, you need to hold or be working towards Level 3 Mat first. That's not us being precious about how we run things. It's a requirement set by EMD UK's Reformer Pilates Method scope of practice, the national body that governs it.

In short: Certification, no Mat needed. YMCA Level 3, Mat comes first.

Which route is actually right for you?

Neither route is the "correct" one. Mat and Reformer training are built for different goals, so choose based on what you actually want, not on what sounds more impressive.

  • You want to start teaching Reformer as fast as possible: the Reformer Certification, no Mat required, get moving now.

  • You want the highest level of formal accreditation currently available for Reformer Pilates in the UK: the YMCA Level 3 Reformer, and Mat comes first, or alongside.

  • You want to teach both Mat and Reformer, and be the kind of instructor studios and gyms actively look for: train in both and save £250 booking them as a bundle instead of separately.

  • You only know you love Reformer and haven't thought about Mat yet: that's fine. Start with Reformer. You can add Mat later.

Is Mat or Reformer the whole of Pilates?

No. Pilates is a full method, built by Joseph Pilates across several different kinds of apparatus, including the Mat, the Reformer, and equipment like the Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels. Mat and Reformer are each one part of that whole system, not the whole of it.

That's part of why, in my view, real depth in Pilates comes from training in both rather than either alone. A dual-qualified instructor understands how the whole system fits together, not just one piece of it, and that means more ways to help the people in front of them, on the Mat, on the Reformer, or moving between the two as a client's body and goals change.

Not everyone in the industry sees it this way. Plenty of excellent instructors build a strong, focused career in one discipline alone, and that's a genuinely good path too.

Whichever order you choose (remember, the YMCA Level 3 Reformer specifically still needs L3 Mat first or alongside, that part doesn't change), working towards both eventually is how you get the fuller picture of Pilates as a method. Neither has to come before the other. This isn't a case for one instead of the other. It's a case for both, over time, if real depth is what you're after.

What if I want both, eventually?

Most people who train with us in one discipline end up asking about the other within a year or two, once they're working and see what dual-qualified instructors earn and where they get hired. If that already sounds like you, booking Mat and Reformer together now saves £250 against booking them separately later, and it's one joined-up training with the same philosophy.

Quick answers to what people actually ask us

Is the Reformer Certification a real, recognised qualification? Yes. It's awarded by Fearless Fitness Training Academy, accepted by studios across the UK, and sufficient for professional teaching insurance. It sits below the YMCA Level 3 in formal accreditation terms, but it's genuinely enough to start working.

How long does Mat before Reformer take altogether, if I want both? Most students complete both within 6 to 12 months, depending on the formats they choose and how quickly they move through assessments. Training days are fixed, but assessment timelines flex around you.

I already hold a Level 3 Mat qualification from somewhere else. Does that count? Yes. Get in touch and we'll talk about going straight into Reformer, or a reduced bundle price if you'd like to train both with us.

Can I decide later, after I've already started? Yes. Plenty of people start with the Reformer Certification and add Mat, or the full YMCA Level 3 Reformer, once they know they want it. Starting with Certification doesn't lock you out of the regulated route later, you'd simply complete Mat at that point instead of now.
