There are so many Pilates training providers out there and it can be very difficult to choose! I am biased but I think you should train with me. Here are just a few reasons why:
I won't teach you nonsense. I will teach you how the body actually works
Many Mat and Reformer Pilates training providers will teach you things that make no sense to how the body actually works. It's crazy to think that's what happens but it does! I read in a training manual written in 2024 that this exercise will strengthen your abdominals
This exercise stretches your abdominals and works the back of the body.
I won't teach you out-dated ideas which have been disproven by science. I will teach you what current evidence shows and how to think critically to make your own decisions
Almost all Pilates schools will teach you that neutral spine and neutral pelvis is the 'safe' place to be. They will also teach you how to palpate (touch) or look at someone's body and see whether they are in 'neutral' or not.
Facts:
- There is no evidence to support neutral spine being superior to other positions
- "Neutral" is a zone, not one place and it means it's in the most lax state (less supported)
- One person's "neutral" is different to the next
- We don't live and move with a "neutral" spine or pelvis. If we train that way it doesn't set us up for moving well in life! And that is why Joseph created Pilates!
- Trained and experienced therapists are really bad at assessing pelvic tilt - why would a Pilates teacher be any good at it?!
In any case there are no mentions of neutral spine in Joseph Pilates' work. He worked through large ranges of motion with no fear! Your spine won't explode if you move it!
I won't just teach you a bunch of exercises. I will teach you how to teach them effectively and how to create classes that flow seamlessly and actually get results for clients whether you're reaching large groups or one-to-one on the Mat or on the Reformer
Many Pilates training providers will teach you how to execute a movement perfectly and that you should not progress people to more "advanced" exercises before they have perfectly mastered others. If you train in the Classical style you will probably also be taught there is a set order of the exercises.
The fact is that Joe taught the person in front of him and gave exercises based on their individual needs. They did then continue to work on their own exercises but it wasn't set for everyone. The method has evolved with many exercises added and influences from other school of thought - the fitness and wholistic world.
With me you will learn:
- Original repertoire and a whole lot more
- How to teach at an appropriate level for the people in front of you
- How to sequence exercises together in a way that is effective both for their bodies and for their time
- How to progress people through levels of challenge so they feel successful, motivated to try more and challenged sufficiently
I won't teach you to parrot off nonsense cues. I teach and apply exercise science principles and the most up-to-date proven way to instruct effectively
Getting stronger requires progressive overload and NOT squeezing or 'activating' your muscles more. That doesn't make you stronger. It spreads the load and makes you fatigue more quickly. Yet we hear it all the time on social media and in Pilates studios.
Giving people 10 cues before they even start moving is counter productive and ineffective. Getting people set-up and moving quickly is much more effective. You will learn how to cue easily so that no-one needs an exercise science degree to understand what you're saying!
In Reformer Pilates will teach you how the springs and equipment settings actually affect movements so you can make decisions which are best for the people in your sessions
I haven't come across any other training provider that teaches this and it's criminal! There are many ways to adapt exercises to suit the individual person in front of you. From adjusting the spring settings, the gear bar and stopper position, to moving the Footbar position or regulating the straps. Understand how to use the Reformer safely and effectively is vital to becoming an incredible instructor and it's not intuitive so you need to be taught the concepts in a way that keeps testing your application of that knowledge. You'll feel empowered to teach incredible classes which will be suitable for the different people who will attend your sessions. No feeling like an imposter here! You'll have confidence in finding solutions using the concepts you learn.
You won't have to fork out loads of extra money to practice or take classes with me. You'll train in a studio close to you where they are actively looking for awesome instructors to join their team
Many training providers require you to attend many additional private and group sessions at your own cost and restrict you to joining sessions with them directly or affiliate teachers or studios. This can often involve many hours of travel too.
I run Reformer courses in wonderful host studios who are actively looking for instructors to join their team. You'll probably be local and you'll get used to their studio and how they run things. The Matwork Pilates course runs online so you can attend from the comfort of your own home. You'll be encouraged to start teaching friends and family in person straight away so you can start to build up your own classes as well as your confidence as you progress through the course.
You won't be full of fear and concerned about damaging anyone. I will teach you the truth about injuries and pain and just how resilient the body is
Our bodies are not machines that wear out from using them. They are the opposite! The stress we put our bodies through is what enables them to adapt (ie. get stronger, more flexible etc). Without appropriate stimulus we cannot make changes to peoples' bodies. Some people think Pilates is magic and will work your body in ways that contradict exercise science. It's not magic, it's movement. And it's movement that a whole group of people really love doing! So you can learn how to engage with people, be a movement optimist and provide a space for them to actually make a big change to their overall health and wellbeing. Want in? Come join me for a Matwork or Reformer Pilates training course.
Courses are running in London, Guildford, Cambridge, Glasgow and online.
